A study has shown that 40,000 eye injuries caused by sports related accidents are treated in the emergency room each year. Even the simplest sport like badminton can cause eye injuries. When it comes to children some are more worried about their appearance and don’t like the way the sports eyewear may look on them, however the many different styles and shapes has change much of that. If your child plays a sport that requires a helment or faceguard, don’t make the mistake of thinking your child’s eyes are protected from injuries. Protective sports eyewear are made with an impact resistant material to protect the face from fast moving objects. The lenses are made of polycarbonate, a light weight material also resistant to impact, however not shatter proof.
When fitting your child for sports eyewear, it’s extremely important that your eyewear is properly fitted. This is especially important for children because parents have a tendancy to buy a bit bigger so the child has room to grow into them. Although some sport goggles are made somewhat flexible with their width adjustment, some growing room may be exceptable in this case. If the frames are oversized this leaves room for eye injury when comming in contact with an object. At first it seems like a way to save money, but not worth the risk of eye injury to your child. Every child’s protective sports eyewear should be reviewed each year for proper fit.
